Merison is a medication used to prevent and treat Ménière's disease, a disorder of the inner ear characterized by symptoms such as dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and loss of hearing. These symptoms are often associated with fluid accumulation in the ear. Merison works by reducing the amount of fluid in the inner ear, thereby relieving these symptoms. It should be taken whole with water at the same time each day, as directed by your doctor.
Common side effects of Merison include headache and nausea. It may also cause indigestion, stomach pain, and bloating. Taking the medication with food can help reduce stomach-related issues. If you have a stomach ulcer, asthma, or high/low blood pressure, inform your doctor before taking Merison. Additionally, disclose any other medications you are taking to ensure safety. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor.
Merison can only decrease the number and severity of attacks associated with Ménière's disease but may not completely stop them. It improves blood flow in the inner ear, reducing excess fluid pressure that can cause symptoms. If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Common side effects include rash, pruritus, urticaria, dyspepsia, nausea, peptic ulcer disease, headache, and insomnia. Merison may interact with antihistamines and may decrease the bronchodilator effects of beta-2 agonists.
The mode of action of Merison involves improving microcirculation in the labyrinth, which reduces endolymphatic pressure. Precautions should be taken in individuals with active peptic ulcers, bronchial asthma, and during pregnancy and lactation.
Merison is usually prescribed in a dose of 1 to 2 tablets three times per day after meals for adults.
It is contraindicated in individuals with phaeochromocytoma and porphyria.
